What is tithing?
Psalms 24:1 declares, "The earth is the Lord's, and all it contains." God owns everything and all blessings come from Him. We are to be good stewards – managers – of the many blessings He’s given us. Money isn't our possession; it's God's possession, which we hold in trust. Tithing is a reminder that God is the supplier of everything we have.
Tithing is giving back to God the first 10% of what God gave to me. Tithe literally means ten percent. What’s neat about it is that it is proportional to God’s blessings toward me. An offering is anything I give above the tenth.
Tithing shows my trust in God. In Malachi 3:10 God says "Bring your whole Tithe into the storehouse that there may be food in my house. Test me in this, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it." This is the only place in Scripture where God tells us to put him to the test. In other words, he’s saying "Go ahead I dare you. See if you can out-give me."
Tithing is a way of giving thanks for God’s provisions. If you trust him then you should trust him with all aspects of your life including your finances. So go ahead. Accept God’s invitation to put him to the test. Start tithing faithfully and watch what he does in and through your life.
